Tongue River Ranch raises about 1300 calves per year. Of these, about 200 heifers are kept for replacements and the rest are sold at private treaty or on video. These calves are 80 percent Angus, and 20 percent Hereford/Angus Cross. When the calves are weaned, they are vaccinated, branded and given age verification tags. The calves are weaned for 45 days and then put on wheat. Our steers weigh 800-850 lbs. and the heifers 700-725 lbs. They will normally reach this weight by February. The calves are then sold to weigh on the truck with a two-percent shrink.
